The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 17 - 20, 1977 Billie Gets Partial Payment of Inheritance From Chet

Friday, June 17, 1977 LAST DAY OF SCHOOL

A quite cloudy miserable day for the last day of school. It rained very hard all PM. Bill and I shopping in a.m., Dawn and Betty to Shaw’s in a.m. In PM they went to see Kimmy. She was a dite better. But in evening Betty and I went to see her and she was very sick again. She wasn’t getting enough oxygen and her lips and fingers were very dark. She was so sick. Betty went back about 11:30. She was still very sick. We called Dorothea when she got back here. Kids in the neighborhood all passed to next grade.

Saturday, June 18, 1977 $10,000.00, Kim a dite better

Billie went down to Les Dudley’s office on business. He paid or gave him a check for $10,000. Later he gets more. He, Billie and Bill went up to Chet’s and got the deep-freeze and tractor. Billie bought them from the estate. Kimmy is a dite better tonight. Lloyd about the same. Betty, Walt, Carmen and Zak over to Norway to shop. Hot and humid, partly cloudy showers about suppertime. Susan and Monica here.

Sunday, June 19, 1977 Father’s Day

Cloudy dreary weather. We have not had a day of sunshine all this month. Dorothea came up for Father’s Day. Bill got money, cards, shirts and a new wristwatch. Dorothea went to the hospital to see Kimmy, N.C. Memorial. Also over to see Lloyd.
