The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 21 - 24, 1977

Thursday, April 21, 1977 VERY HOT

It has been a very very hot day. 85 to 90°. I cleaned all my radiators. An awful job. Kimmy has been busy all day. Here and down to her house, she made me a nice cake. Bill raked Betty’s roadside. Zak has been up here off and on then tonight he came for supper and to stay all night. Betty and the girls have been working on the cages all day. Carmen helped too. We called at Fern’s after supper to pick Esther up. Vince came for water. Grass got real green, we need rain. It is quite dry. A grass fire at Irene Chadbourne’s up above here.

Cloudy all day, some light rain showers. Billie got his fencing done. Also a few other jobs. Betty and Walt got a new stove today. A Queen Atlantic in very good condition. Kim don’t act good today. Fern here for supper. Esther and Cliff called after supper.

A miserable rainy day. I didn’t do much after I got the work done. I got my reading caught up. Billie took it easy. Went to see Chet. He is very poorly.
