The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 26 - 28, 1976

Tuesday, October 26, 1976

It was cloudy when we got up, but it cleared later in the day. Bill worked at camp. I done regular work. In p.m. I worked in living room. Betty came up, we change the living room furniture around, it looks good but I feel as though I was away or something. I’d like a smaller couch. Lloyd went to the hospital for examination, he is okay except a little urine in his water. So he is okay. Carmen and Betty up here this evening. Carmen had an old-fashioned dress on, she will be wearing to school Friday for a act for social studies. Quite a girl.

Wednesday, October 27, 1976 COLD

This is been a very cold day but clear and sunny. I done a big wash, down to Betty’s early. Bill up to camp all day, home at noon. I did some cooking. Joy and Betty here in p.m. Joy is satisfied so far with things being settled as they are so far at her father’s. Also Pat is very good to her. Joy is so pleased Pat is like that. Went down to Dawn’s and store. Tonight Esther and Cliff were here for supper. They will be leaving Sunday for Florida.

Thursday, October 28, 1976 cold, mostly sunny. Bill helped Walt

Early (1:55 AM) Betty called me, we went down to Fern’s, took Lloyd to the hospital to have a catheter put on, he couldn’t make water. We took him down and brought him home. I washed, done my windows inside and out. Joy, Ronald and Debbie called. Ronald has gone back. We called at Pat’s and Fern’s in evening. Pat and Joy are getting along just fine. Bill helped Walt put up his gates today. Robert gone one week today.
