The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 24 - 27, 1976 Kim's Second Heart Surgery

Tuesday, August 24, 1976 KIM TO MAINE MEDICAL CENTER, COW BRED

Today we left early Joy, Betty and I and took Kimberly to the Maine Medical Center in Portland for her other heart operation. It was a beautiful day. We called at Dorothea’s, went out to see Mary Anne’s house, a brand-new home out in Buxton. We hated to leave Kimmy, yet she didn’t mind. Robert all upset this p.m. when Joy went to see him. Joy is so upset about Pat, the way she is treating her. Bill up to camp today.

I got up very early this morning, got my work done up. Betty came about 7:30. We left to go to the Maine Medical Center in Portland. We got there about 8:30. We saw Kim, she was all ready for the operating room. About 9:30 they came for her. Mary Anne came to see her also this morning. Dawn came down and we went to the 6th floor to wait. Kim went to the operating room and 9:30 5th floor. She went to recovery at 1 PM and was there until 5 PM. Then they brought her up to the INTENSIVE CARE where she will be for three or four days. She didn’t come to so she knew us or anything. A Very Sick girl. It was a very long and serious operation. APRIL 25, 1972 KIM WENT THROUGH A BIG SERIOUS OPERATION, OPEN HEART SURGERY.
