The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 21 - 22, 1976 Robert Smith Died

Thursday, October 21, 1976 ROBERT ALLEN SMITH

Today Bill’s first batch of medicines came from Lovell’s Pharmacy at Sanford. It cleared after some showers this morning but very windy and cold. Bill and I went to town grocery shopping. Then in p.m. we went over to Fryeburg, Lovell and East Conway looking for dry beans, but didn’t find any. We came home, got supper and had just finished and the phone rang. Billie answered, it was Pat. Said Robert went out into the woods at about 1 PM, was coming back at four to take his medicine, but he did not. So Billie went right over and he and Pat went way out to the woods, it began to get dark so Billie told Pat they had better come back and call for help. Pat called the police, central Maine guys cars, trucks and jeeps all there. Walt went up with his Volkswagen, he and Freya walked into the woods. They found Robert way beyond the truck over on the other side of the brook. Pip was with him and Freya heard Pip crying out so she led Walt right to Bob and Pip. He was gone.

Friday, October 22, 1976 Kids to dentist

This is been a day of frustration and wonder. The shock of Robert’s death and the finding of his body in the woods. In a.m. Bill and I went to town. In p.m. we went over to Fryeburg, Lovell, East Conway and around that area out looking for dry beans again. Came home, got supper. Esther and Cliff came over, we talked about Robert and it was so uppermost on our minds. Ronald and Joy came tonight. Betty met Joy at the airport in p.m. Later Joy and Betty went back to Portland and got Ronald at the airport. Joy and Pat down to the funeral parlor and to pick out Roberts casket.
