The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Tuesday, August 31, 1976 Beautiful morning

A nice clear sunny morning. I done up my work. Got ready and went to Portland with Betty. Bill too. We saw Kim, she is much better. Quite weak. She is looking forward to playing in the playroom and getting home. Robert not at all good. Joy feels so bad. He will come home tomorrow.

Wednesday, September 1, 1976

A quite nice day. I done up my work, washed. Did a few other odd jobs. Bill worked on the barn addition. Zak up here all day. Joy, Carmen and Zak here for supper. Betty and Walt went to see Kim then to Mary Anne’s for supper. Joy over to Robert’s in p.m. He is in bad shape. Very unhappy and despondent. He hated to have Joy go. She was all shook up when she got home. Kimmy still good.

Thursday, September 2, 1976 cloudy and showers, JOY LEFT, CHET 87 years

I done up my work, got ready. Joy and Betty came at about 6:30. We went to the airport and saw Joy off for Bermuda. Then we went to the hospital to see Kimmy. She was in good spirits and feeling quite well. She is anxious to get home. After we got home at about 12 we had Italian sandwiches. Then I went down to Betty’s to help she and Carmen clean up. Then we went to town and got a few things. Robert not at all good. Joy was so upset to leave him. Billie up to Chet’s tonight to help him celebrate his 87th birthday.

Friday, September 3, 1976 Althea $92.80 Bill $213 KIM DID NOT COME HOME

We went to Portland to get Kimmy, but when we got down there the Dr. didn’t want her to come home. She didn’t mind too much because she couldn’t come home. So we went grocery shopping. Laurie Smith went with us. Kimmy was very glad to see her. We stayed with Kim about an hour.
