The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 7, 1974

Thursday, September 5, 1974

A nice and sunny day for the school kids. I worked down to Betty’s all day. Cleaned up her house etc. Bill mowed the lawns. Carmen still home, has a sore throat. I talked with Dorothea. She was down in the dumps. Jeff is giving her a hard time. He has such far-fetched ideas and plans. No interest in school. Hope it all will smooth out as the school year wears on. It is always hard for her after he has come back home from his father’s place. I did a big wash. Billie went with Lawrence tonight. Fern, Lloyd and Esther called tonight.

It has been cloudy all day. Bill worked at Walt’s on the roof. I worked at Betty’s helping her because she was sick. Carmen went back to school today. Zak up here in forenoon for lunch and I got him ready for school. I went to town in p.m. Walt home early today. He had testing to do in Norway. Carmen was glad to be back to school. She enjoys it all. Billie up to Chet’s tonight. I did a big ironing.

When we got up it was raining. It stopped, was cloudy and foggy. Then about 10:30 it began to clear and by 11 it was all clear and sunny. A beautiful day. We was happily surprised today. At about 10 AM Dorothea and David drove in. Dorothea stayed here and Dave went to the garage. She was here until late in p.m. went Dave came back for her. Lloyd called, Esther called and Betty. Before Dorothea went we got her some vegetables. Bill, Walt done some soil testing. I did some cooking. Billie went with Lawrence to pick up a big load of cattle down to Rodney Wells at Wells Maine. Kim came up, also Zak called.
