The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 17 - 20, 1974


Wednesday, July 17, 1974 HAULED DIRT, Dorothea came up today for a few days visit

A beautiful day. Dorothea came up. We went to town and over to June Brown Bachelors, got a lot of information and help there. We enjoyed the visit their very much. In evening Dorothea and I called at Esther Allen’s and on Stanley at the hospital. He is much better. Tonight Albert Graham came up and hauled the dirt from out in back of the barn. It looks much better.



Thursday, July 18, 1974

A nice hot day. Dorothea and I went over to Bill Walker’s and then we called on some people, but didn’t get any information of importance. Betty was expecting someone to come to see the horse BJ, so she stayed at home. In evening we went down to Fern’s. Esther was there.



Friday, July 19, 1974 CHRISTIE GONE ONE MONTH TODAY

Partly cloudy, very hot. Betty, Dorothea, Zak and I went to Bethel, Bryant Pond and Denmark. We called on people for information for Dorothea’s family records. I bought a stool today. We enjoyed the trip very much. Billie mowed his pasture over. Tonight Bill, Dorothea and I went over to see Rayburn’s house he is going to buy over in South Harrison. Betty came up tonight. Dorothea went home tonight. Stan White went home from the NCM Hospital today. It has been a month today since Christie has been gone. We still miss her.



Saturday, July 20, 1974 Walt 45 years

A nice day except quite windy. Billie mowed Walt’s hay. I done regular housework, washed floor, washed a few things. Quite busy all day. Betty and kids had a birthday for Walt which they all enjoyed very much. He got nice gifts. Betty bought her china closet.
