The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 13 - 15, 1974

Kennard, Clint and Pearl Edwards, Esther and Zak, Fern and Nanny

Picnic on the ride home

Zak being a hobo

Tuesday, August 13, 1974 hot and dry, up to Clint’s

A very nice and sunny day. Up early, rushed around, done up my work and made some sandwiches. Got ready and at about 9 AM we left to go up to Clint Edwards up to Wilton, Maine. Kennard, Fern, Esther, Betty, Zak and I. We enjoyed the visit very much and he, Clinton, his wife too, was glad to see us, as we were them. We visited with them for about two hours. Came home, got supper. In evening Betty, Zak and I went down to Fern’s a minute. She gave us some beautiful family dishes. Billie home today, he and Lloyd went to Norway. Bill worked down in the woods. Kids went swimming. Clint Edwards was a boy Uncle Fred raised. Very close to this family especially Kennard, Kennie and Fern.

Wednesday, August 14, 1974 Drought

A sunny day but very windy. We are now having a drought. We haven’t had any rain for over three weeks. Lawns are drying up and the gardens are suffering for rain. I done regular work. Made an angel cake delight. Had Zak in a.m. Billie washed and cleaned the cars. I was down to Betty’s in p.m. Carmen and Kim at the beach all day with the picnic lunch. After supper Bill and I called at Dorothea and David’s. Fern and Lloyd went with us.

Thursday, August 15, 1974 no rain

Another very hot dry day. I done regular work. Down to Betty’s while she took Bill’s lunch down. It was very pretty in the woods. In p.m. Billie took Esther and I for a long afternoon ride over through Brownfield, Denmark, up into New Hampshire. A very nice ride. We saw all of Lawrence’s cattle. Kim came up here for a few days. Joy called at Betty’s today. Carmen went back with them today.
