The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 24, 1974

Sunday, July 21, 1974

When we got up we had the sun shining and it dawned a beautiful day. I done up the regular work and took my bath and did a wash. Billie began to work on the hay as soon as it dried off. And a happy surprise about 12:30 or so. Dorothea and David came. David came to help hay. But before they got the hay raked it got cloudy and a shower came up. They got 57 bales made up and in the barn. Darn rain and showers. Hope to get them tomorrow.

A very nice day but no hay went into the barn. They got a ready to bale after it got dried off and the baler broke. We are all quite edgy now. Hope and pray it will get in tomorrow. Weather looks okay tonight. I worked at Betty’s all PM. In a.m. we went to the barn and garage stores and picked up a couple things. Bill helped Cliff today on his roof.

Tuesday, July 23, 1974 Got all their hay in at Walt’s

I washed. Cleaned up the house, went down to Betty’s. We cleaned up her house then we picked some beans (string). Fern came up and we got them ready and put them in the freezer. It was cloudy and foggy in a.m. It cleared in forenoon. They came, raked the hay over. Then at noon Lawrence came with the baler. Got it baled and Billie stayed home from work and Bill from Cliff’s. They got the hay all in just about 20 minutes before the rain came. What a good feeling.

A nice day. Bill working at Cliff’s. Dorothea got up here early. We didn’t go anywhere today. Called on Lorraine in p.m. and Delores and Kennard. In evening called at Esther’s. Dorothea did. She had supper over there. Dorothea likes Betty’s new dishes.
