The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 31 - August 3, 1974


Wednesday, July 31, 1974

A quite nice day. I done up my regular work. Was going to make a pie and picked beans, went down to Betty’s while she was away. I done a few things down there, came home and made some filled cookies and did a washing. About noon Dorothea came. We got ready and went over to North Waterford and made a call at (?) Jean and Ethel Lovejoy’s. Called on a Hally Harriman. Came home, got supper then Esther, Betty and I went down to Thena’s.




Thursday, August 1, 1974 MOVED HOUSE

A very nice sunny mild day. We got up early, washed, made a pie, ironed done regular work. Went down to Betty’s a little while. Dorothea took me to town. I done grocery shopping. Then Betty, Esther, Dorothea and I all went down and watched them move the house up on to Main Hill. Bill didn’t work at Cliff’s, he mowed lawns for us and Betty. Came home, got supper. Called at Betty’s. Well we enjoyed Dorothea being up here these past three weeks for a few days at a time. Dorothea left for home about 8:00 PM. Ilan fixed the lawn mower.



Friday, August 2, 1970 for Hortons left about 8 AM

The Horton family left about 8 AM to go on a trip to central Maine for a few days vacation at Walt’s sister and brother-in-law’s cottage. Going to stop at Joy and Buddy’s place on Saturday.









Saturday, August 3, 1974 Bill Social Security $180.90, Althea Social Security $83.80

A very nice day, very hot and humid. Done regular work, fed cats and dogs at Betty’s. Made a cake, washed floors. Fern and Lloyd called after supper. Bill and Billie made a run and a coop for the chickens.
