The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 10 - 12, 1974


Wednesday, July 10, 1974 Christie gone three weeks today

Not quite so hot today. A good breeze. I cooked a little, done up regular work. Washed and ironed. Zak here this forenoon. In p.m. Betty, Zak and I went to Westbrook, ate lunch at Dorothea’s. She want there. We found her at Annie’s just a little distance from her place. Betty bought a few things. Called on Fern and Lloyd. Bill and I did then Bill had to go with Walt so Betty and Zak came after me. We had a very bad thundershower last night. Had Swiss chard greens tonight. Bill and I walked down to the spring today. Christie gone three weeks and still miss her a lot.



Thursday, July 11, 1974

Another very nice day. I went down to Betty’s and helped her while she mowed lawns. I helped her do some of her work. Joy called at Betty’s today. Betty took Fern and Lloyd to town shopping. Bill hauled some more dirt. Zenya over to Carmen’s all night and today. This is been a cool and windy day. Dorothea called on the phone tonight.



Friday, July 12, 1974 KIMBERLEY TO MM Center for her annual checkup

Kimberley is in very good health and her heart is nearly back to normal. She has to go back in a year for a checkup and when she is ten she will have her other operation if it is necessary. Zak up here a while in a.m. then down to Ferns for dinner. Billie having stomach trouble, don’t feel very good. Bill hoed the garden. All up, it looks very nice
