The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 2 - 4, 1974 First Day of School

Monday, September 2, 1974 got our first PULLET EGGS

Well this is been a cloudy, some light rain and a dreary day. Kim still quite sick. Freya got into  hedge hog quills. Betty and Walt took her to the vets to get them out. They put her to sleep. I babysat. In p.m. I did stay again while they went to Conway. In evening Betty cut ZAK’S hair. We called at Fern’s in evening. Bill and Billie didn’t do much today. A miserable day.

Tuesday, September 3, 1974 HEAVY RAIN, $180.90 Bill Social Security, $83.80 Althea Social Security

It has rained so hard all day. I done regular work. Bill didn’t work. Betty, Zak and I went to town to shop. Paid my monthly bills etc. Got my glasses. Changed the bows. Came home, cooked a fried chicken dinner. Kim is better. Walt was sick last night, but got up later and went to work.

Wednesday, September 4, 1974 FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

This has been a miserable rainy day. It is the first day of school and Zak started this year. He was very pleased to go. He looked very cute. Kimmy also was glad to get back to school. She has been kind of lonely the summer. She looked very good her new outfit. Also Carmen was pleased to get back. She was taken sick and had to come home at noon.
