The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 3 - 5, 1974 A Bad Storm

BJ Frisco and Lady's Ebony
Wednesday, July 3, 1974 COWS IN NEW BARN FIRST TIME, HORSE BJ, HOT

Cloudy in a.m. I washed, went down to Betty’s in a.m. She took me to town shopping in p.m. This is been a very hot day. I was down to Betty’s when the new horse came. She is a very pretty one and seems kind. Bill put the cupboard in the barn today. Tonight Billie brought the cows into the barn for the first time. Bill and I went to the hospital to see Stan. He was better.

Thursday, July 4, 1974 BAD STORM, HOT, ES AND CLIFF LEFT

Another very hot day. Bill and Billie mowed lawns. Worked out in the barn doing odds and end jobs. In a.m. I went to the parade with Betty in Fern and Lloyd’s car. Betty drove them down. The parade was very good, also the police and firemen’s water battle. In p.m. all went to Betty and Walt’s for a cookout and then there was a very bad electrical storm. Awful lightning AND terrible wind and rain. It was awful bad and down in Bridgton village it blew trees over, broke them in the middle, uprooted many and they were blown over on houses. Much much damage was done. Also in other parts of this town and Casco it was bad, Naples and Sebago also other towns in this area. Esther and Cliff left for Pennsylvania today for Cliff’s brother’s wedding.

Friday, July 5, 1974

This is been a nasty wet miserable day. Dark and dreary all day. Betty and I rode around looking at the damage the storm did yesterday. Kim up in a.m. and Carmen in p.m. Billie got the plywood at Betty’s and he and Bill did the sawdust pen today. I made a chocolate pie. Not much else. The tree expert crews, telephone and light crews all very busy today cleaning up from the horrible mess made by the storm.
