The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It rained last night. Cloudy today. Bill worked at Betty’s. Betty took the beds over to Bonnie’s. I helped at Betty’s. We got the kids clothes all sorted out and ready for them to wear to school. Betty and Bill cleaned out the dove pen. She fixed it up for a storeroom for her things and kids bikes, toys etc. Es and Cliff over here tonight. It cleared off after supper.

Bill working at Camp Encore. He only worked one half day. In p.m. he went down to Walt’s to fix the roof. Billie picked garden things. I done a lot of work, cooked and all. It cleared in p.m. some.

Sunday, September 1, 1974 Outside lunch at Fern and Lloyd’s, Jeff is home

A most beautiful day. Up early, made preparations to go away. I done up my regular work, washed a dite, defrosted refrigerator. Left to go down there at about 11. Bob and Pat, Cliff and Esther, Betty, Walt and three children, Carmen, Kim and Zak, David, Dorothea and son Jeffrey (just home from Michigan). Bill, Billie and me. It was a very good turkey and salads, potato chips, cukes, tomatoes etc., fruit, ice cream, cookies and brownies. Very good and all enjoyed it very much. Came home about six. Dorothea and Dave came. We gave them some vegetables and Betty gave them some eggs. Later we went down to Hortons and Joy, Buddy and girls, Debbie, Laurie, Kathy, and Cindy called. Bill and Walt worked on the roof.
