The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 20 - 23, 1974

Tuesday, August 20, 1974 hot

A very nice hot day. Up early, got my work done. Got ready, went to Dorothea’s and out to South Portland looking for station wagons. Then to Zayre’s and the grocery shopping. Back to Dorothea’s and picked up Carmen and left Kim for the night. Dorothea is beginning to get upset about Jeff. If only he gets grown into manhood and understands the world etc. Carmen was glad to get home. Bill worked at Camp Encore today. Tonight Betty and I sat up her furniture she has bought to sell. Zak is up here tonight again. Walt done a lot of soil testing today.

Another dry sunny day. I washed, done my regular work. Dorothea came up to look at the furniture. She bought one piece. Betty sold some. Zak went home. Kim came back home. Zak went down to Dorothea’s for the day. But Walt forgot to pick him up so he stayed at Dorothea’s tonight. In evening Fern, Lloyd called and so did Esther and Betty. Bill went with Walt to test soil. Betty had some people down to look at the furniture.
