The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 10 - 12, 1974 Surprise Party for Nanny







Saturday, August 10, 1974 Hot

A beautiful day. I done a lot of work. Made bread, cookies, cake and baked beans. Took a bath and got ready and went down to Betty and Walt’s for supper. A surprise to me. They gave me a birthday party. I had observed my birthday very quietly on the eighth. Anyway I got some nice gifts and it was all very nice. Dorothea made a very pretty cake as usual. Demings, Yates, Thomases and Crooks.



Sunday, August 11, 1974 Got a calf

A beautiful hot day. I did some washing and done up the housework. I cleaned up the cars. Then Billie went with Lawrence and I didn’t get the cars washed. Billie got another calf half Charolais and half Holstein. Got it for Bill to raise.



Monday, August 12, 1974 Hot

Betty, Zak and I all went to Portland. Betty did grocery shopping, got shoes for her and Zak. Got home in good season. About 3 PM. Billie to the auction with Lawrence. Bill worked on the saw trying to get it to go. In evening Bill went with Walt to test soil at Knights Hill development. Betty, Zak and I took a walk down on the lower lot. Carmen and Zenya went bike riding. I washed this morning.
