The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 24 - 26, 1974 Visiting with Frances and Thena

Saturday, August 24, 1974 Hot

Hot, a terrible hot day. I did a lot of odds and end jobs. I cooked. Carmen still here. She rode horseback. A man or a friend of Walt’s, Ed Clifford, came today and stayed at Walt’s. Bill worked at Walt’s on the porch roof. This is been a very hot day. We had terrible thundershowers. It came in on the light switches etc. It got cooler though.

Sunday, August 25, 1974 $25 from Walt

A very nice sunny and cool day. A good breeze. I was busy all day making preparations for visitors tomorrow. Frances, Thena, Fern, Esther and Betty. I washed, cleaned up around the house. In late p.m. the Horton’s asked us out for supper. We went to Richard’s in Sebago. Had a delicious feed. Bill worked at Walt all day. Ilan hauled his furniture from Betty’s he bought. Their company left about one or two to go home. Carmen and Mr. Clifford rode the horses. Dorothea and Dave called in Fern and Lloyd. Very pleased to have them. They went out for supper. We stopped at the museum in Naples. Kids enjoyed it. Dawn and Ed left this morning for Las Vegas, a prize-winning truck.
