The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 4 - 6, 1974

Sunday, August 4, 1974

Another very humid day. I done regular work. We done chores at Betty’s. Went over to Maple Ridge, Harrison to a horse show. I figured the bills and our income etc. As usual nothing left to go and come on after the bills are paid. I am worried about getting the taxes paid. We need more Social Security. Hortons arrived home about 4:30 PM. All had a good time. They were here for supper. Showers late this p.m. and tonight.

Monday, August 5, 1974 a nice day

Another nice day. I did a wash early this morning. Also defrosted my refrigerator in the kitchen. I rushed around, got ready and we went to Portland to school shop for the kids. Got the girls nearly togged out. Dorothea went with us. I paid the bills, house, insurance and all. Didn’t get home very early. Esther here this evening. Gordon called on Bill today to talk about the property settlement. He is quite worried and upset. Bill down to talk it over with Walt. Walt went down to see Jack. Jack is so nervous and tense Walt said.

Tuesday, August 6, 1974 Bill began work for Walt

A beautiful day. I done my regular work. Ironed. Went down to Betty’s while she went to the dentist. In p.m. we went to town shopping. Then we picked string beans down there. After supper we picked string beans and I babysat for Betty and Walt. They went to visit some friends of Walt’s. Zenya and Carmen slept in the tent last night. Zak and Kim on the porch. Bill began work for Walt. Mr. Reese called Bill, he wanted to see him tomorrow at 10. Defrosted outside refrigerator.
