The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 23 - 27, 1959



Saturday, May 23, 1959

Not so warm. Had the house all closed up today. I churned and cooked and cooked. Betty to town and got her shoes and socks, also food for the bird. Gloria Arsenault and her sisters and brothers here today, also David Nevers. Kennard called.



Sunday, May 24, 1959

COLD. Cloudy and gray, rained by showers. Billie put up new hen yard. Bill worked for Ervin Linscott.



Monday, May 25, 1959

Came off hot after a very cool early morning. I washed. It was a very hot day and clothes dried good. In evening Raymond called. Bob and Blanche also. Betty up to Dawn’s tonight. Dawn is at the supper at the church.



Tuesday, May 26, 1959

A very nice hot day after a little cool in the early morning. I churned and ironed. Dawn and Holly called in a.m. I ironed on the back porch for the first time this year. It evening Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stiles called. Bill went down and got Jean’s tractor and harrowed the garden.



Wednesday, May 27, 1959

A hot day. I cleaned up the house. John Foster Dulles funeral today, we saw it on TV.
