The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sunday, June 14, 1959 Birthday of Kennard and Kennie

RAINY day. Fern and Esther to the B. H. S. Alumni banquet. I took care of Billie and Susan. Bob and Blanche called.




Monday, June 15, 1959

Rain. A rainy Monday. Done up the work.



Tuesday, June 16, 1959

Rain. It has rained and rained again all day. We just done the work. Fern and Susan at Ferns and Lloyds for dinner and supper. Frances, Thena and Lila over to their house picking over Aunt Linnie’s things, taking care of them.



Wednesday, June 17, 1959

Rain again. We finally washed today. It rained so awful hard. In p.m. Es went over to Aunt Ava’s, they called at Dot and Forrest. Susan frosted cake. Frances Brackett to the hospital today.



Thursday, June 18, 1959

Rain again. Another rainy dreary day, got in some of clothes in forenoon. Ironed some. Dot, Lorraine, Mr. Yates and children called in a.m. In p.m. Es and Susan over to June Stackhouse and got their hair done. They looked so nice when they got home. The girls from Dawn’s came up tonight. I finished ironing in p.m. Raymond called this p.m. He has traded cars for a 1953 Chrysler. Raymond and Lila called in the evening.
