The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 10 - 13, 1959 New Car - A RED Letter Day



Wednesday, June 10, 1959

A HOT HOT day. Didn’t do much except to look after the kids. Raymond here for supper. Betty finished up her school today. Came home in p.m., went to a class party at Stevie Stevens camp on Long Lake. Mike went too, all had a good time. Betty hurt her back. Es, kids and I down in the pasture after supper. We ironed today. Nola Raye down today. Nancy Smart Dyer had a 9 pound baby.

Thursday, June 11, 1959

A nice day. Cooler but sunny. I cleaned up the whole house. Billie, Susan and Esther and Betty up in field looking for strawberries. Esther and Susan down to Ferns in p.m. Betty gone down to school to get her papers.



Friday, June 12, 1959

A cold day. Schools finished today. Betty was quite happy it was all over. Betty up to Dawn’s in p.m. I cooked some.



Saturday, June 13, 1959 NEW CAR

A cold cloudy day. I cooked some. It was cloudy and showery in p.m. Billie bought a 1953 Pontiac car of Staley Chevrolet today. A light green body and a ivory top. Very pretty. Bill didn’t work, only part of day.
