The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

April 22 - 25, 1959

Wednesday, April 22, 1959

A very nice day. Betty’s day. She took over the house and prepared an Italian dish for supper. It was very very nice. The table was set up and a very pretty centerpiece with two candles on each side. She had a very good time and it was all very relaxing to her. I’m so glad she enjoyed herself so much. I went down and helped Fern cleaned her bedroom and the hallway. Mama was over to Aunt Ava’s. Billie finished up over to Raymond’s.

Today Billie told Chet he couldn’t come back to work for him. They have been so good to him all the years he worked for them. I feel so sorry for Chet and Lil. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os here for supper.

A very good day. Warm. I washed a small wash, hung clothes out back. I wrote a letter to a Mr. McPherson, the President of the Retarded Children’s Association for a child to board. Betty up to Dawn’s most of the day. Dawn has a house full of company for the weekend. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Bill and I to town and paid some more bills. $58.50. Tonight I finished the shed chamber.

Kind of cloudy in a.m. Cleared off in p.m. I cooked, churned, cleaned up the house downstairs. Betty with Dawn’s company all day, to movies in evening. Mike came home today. Billie worked for Chet. Kennard, Brud and Jeffrey called in p.m. Gave Brud some old old papers and a loaf of fresh homemade bread.
