The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, April 16, 1959 Raymond Yates Smith birthday

Today I worked upstairs cleaning the draws, chests etc. In p.m. Jean, Sally and girls called. Kind of cloudy. Tonight was the B. H. S. Minstrel show. I went with Blanche, it was very good. Billie smelting again tonight, no smelt tho.



Friday, April 17, 1959

A very nice day. Warm. I finished the chest upstairs, cleaned up the whole house. Today there was an Air Raid test all over the nation. Betty came home from school tonight happy and pleased to rest up for a week, it’s vacation. She went to the movies with Mike. Aunt Ava to the doctors this p.m. Billie still doing chores.



Saturday, April 18, 1959 Raymond S Allen birthday

A nice day. On the cold side. I done up the work, cooked, went to town. Called at Aunt Ava’s. Billie still doing the chores over there. Billie over and worked for Raymond all p.m. for FREE. Quite cold in p.m. Janice here for supper. Betty to movies with Dawn and Janice in p.m.



Sunday, April 19, 1959

A nice warm day. I got dinner, churned, done up the work. Bill fixed his car. Billie got the hens out in yard today. Betty up to Dawn’s.



Monday, April 20, 1959 Letter from Adair

Kind of cloudy in a.m. I washed. Today we got a letter from Dorothea. Also some nice pictures. They were so good.



Tuesday, April 21, 1959

A very nice day, on the cool side. I started the shed chamber. Betty not here much. She is unhappy today. Billie worked for Raymond today. I done my ironing, made an orange pie. A nice sunny day. Dennis hired Billie today to work at Walter Redfield’s for the summer. $45 per week and unemployment benefits.
