The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 30 - April 3, 1959



Monday, March 30, 1959

A very nice day. I washed, got the clothes in in p.m. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Early this morning we got the sad news from Fern, Bill Harmon died. It has saddened the whole town. He is one of the most liked men in town. Left his wife with eight children.



Tuesday, March 31, 1959

Another nice day. I done up the work and ironed. Billie and Bill worked for Raymond. Billie down to town hall and signed up for unemployment. Vic Nevers called here this p.m. Betty and Kay went out and got donations for Bill Harmon’s family.



Wednesday, April 1, 1959 Minnie Smart’s birthday

Today William E. Harmon’s funeral at M. E. Church. It was all so sad. A very big funeral. Never was one as big before in Bridgton. A very nice day. Fern and I went with Raymond. Bill up to Plattsburgh New York with Vic Nevers to get a job, no job though. Left at about 4 AM, got home at 6:30 PM. Fern, Billie and I took some things up to the Harmon family for their supper.



Thursday, April 2, 1959 Dorothy Prescott’s birthday LETTER FROM ADAIR’S.

I cleaned up the upstairs. We got a very nice letter from the Adair’s and some of the prettiest little pictures of our grandson, Jeffrey Dennis Adair.



Friday, April 3, 1959

A very nice day. I cleaned up the downstairs. Snow going.
