The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 9 - 12, 1986

 

Tuesday, September 9, 1986 Esther left for home

 

A beautiful day. Sunny when we got up and all day. Got the work done up, got ready to take Esther to the airport. Dorothea, Betty S and Betty H and me. Came home and watched the TV in PM. Carmen came while we was gone. She did the vacuuming, dusted, washed floors and did the washing. It seems so quiet with Esther gone. Also Kim, Eddie and Zack. Bill and Billie to the doctors, reports are okay. Dorothea and Carmen called this evening wore tonight. Also Betty got a call from Zack. He is still contented. Vince came and said goodbye this morning to Es.

 

 

 

Wednesday, September 10, 1986

 

Sun up this morning when we got up. A very nice day. I done up the work. Watched all TV soaps. Billie and I over to Oxford and got some vegetables. A poor growing year this year. It seems different with Es gone. Carmen came, she and Dennis, they got the groceries.

 


 

 

Thursday, September 11, 1986 I got a call from Zack tonight, it was so good to hear his voice

 

Got up this morning, and it was cloudy and has been most of the day and some dite of rain. I done up the work, defrosted refrigerator. Cleaned the oven. Then Betty and I over to Norway. Well tonight we got a call from Zack. He had tried to get his folks. He sounded very good, happy and relaxed. He likes, is getting along fine. They are drilling. He has made many new friends.

 

 

 

Friday, September 12, 1986

 

I did a wash, done up the regular work. Made some brownies. Bill reading all day. I watched the soaps. Bill reading all day. Milan called. Betty dropped in.
