The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 14 - 16, 1986

 

Thursday, August 14, 1986 cleaned well, KIM got to Boston and EDDIE LATE TONIGHT

 

It was foggy again this morning but cleared off. I made some salad dressing, went down with Betty to get Zack. Carmen and Dennis called and they cleaned out the wells. I hope it will make the water taste better. They all helped. Well still don’t know where Kim is. Today Betty got a call from Kim. She had been held up and was very late leaving Chicago. Her luggage is in Tokyo. I hope she gets it soon. David got rest of hay.

 


 

 

 

Friday, August 15, 1986

 

Well it was foggy in a.m. but it cleared in PM. I been busy. Watched TV soaps in PM. Billie mowed lawns. I did the washing. Other odd jobs. Bill been reading. Bill took Zack to school. Betty and I went down to get him.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 16, 1986 Kim came home, Eddie to MMA for four years

 

We met Kim at the airport at about 1 PM. Eddie was with her, Eddie came with her on his way to MMA. Well we was very very glad to see Kim today home all safe and sound. After a two months to the day visit in Jakarta Indonesia. She looked very good and Eddie came with her on the plane to Portland. He is leaving there for school in Castine MMA for four years. He and Kim had a very nice visit for two days alone. He looks very good.
