The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 17 - 20, 1986

 

Sunday, August 17, 1986 KIM’S HOMECOMING PARTY AT CAMP, A LOT OF SWIMMING

 

Today it was nice and sunny all day. All was up to camp for Kim’s welcome home party. She was very pleased to be home. We had hot dogs, hamburgers, salad, chips etc. A cake I made for her. Milan, Betty and Fern, Dorothea, David, Joy, Cindy and her friend, Bill, Billie, me, Carmen, Walt, Betty, Zack and all the dogs there to welcome her back.

 



 





 

Monday, August 18, 1986

 

Not a very good day. Carmen went and did the shopping today. I made a pudding. Zack not feeling too good. He hurt his head. Got a slight concussion. Betty and the kids looking at campers today. Zack to school this morning.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 19, 1986 Es came tonight by plane

 

Well kind of on the partly cloudy side. About the time for Esther to arrive it cleared. Susan and family met her at the airport. She was pleased. Betty, Kim, Dorothea and I all was at Betty and Milan’s when she came. It was nice to meet her. She seemed pleased to see everyone. Zack didn’t go to school today because of hurting his head yesterday. Carmen came and cleaned up the house. Washed windows in the house, looks very good when she gets it all done. Billie and Zack (blank)

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 20, 1986

 

A quite nice day, on the hot and humid side. We had shell beans for supper. Esther was here, had turkey, shell beans, cukes, mashed potatoes, hot bread and Esther’s favorite ice cream. She spent the evening and enjoyed it all. Zack to school. Billie and Zack got the fence stakes up today.
