The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 21 - 24, 1986 Zak's Going Away Party

 

Thursday, August 21, 1986

 

A very nice sunny day. We went to Portland to school shop for Zack. Also shopped for the baby shower which is coming up soon for Carmen. Came home, got supper. Esther called in the evening and Dorothea. Kim, Carmen, Zack, Betty and I went on this shopping trip today. Billie worked on the fence all alone today. Zack didn’t go to school. Our spring and well test on the water came back. It is not good. Both are polluted.

 

 

 

Friday, August 22, 1986

 

On the clear cool side. It is windy. Did the regular work and washed. Betty and I down to get Zack, his last day of school. He is all through at LAKE REGION HIGH. He will be entering a military academy in Woodstock, Virginia on September 7. Billie and Zack are hooking up the electric fence today. Billie’s foot not very good today. Kim’s luggage has not come yet.

 

 

 

Saturday, August 23, 1986 Zacks going away party at Twin Oaks and birthday

 

It was nice early morning and most of forenoon. Got the work done and began to make preparations for Zack’s going away party at twin Oaks. He got a lot of nice gifts and money for his going away and birthday combined. Milan, Betty, Esther, Chris, Bill, Kathy and I, Dorothea, Fern, Joy, Kathy, Carmen, Dennis. Betty, Walt, Kim and Zack. It was nice, he was very pleased. Later in PM Billie Deming and his girlfriend called, they announced their wedding intentions.

 




 

 

Sunday, August 24, 1986

 

A quite nice day. We didn’t do too much. Zack called, he and Billie busy all day. Milan called a little while. Esther over to Susan’s. Dorothea called.
