The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Sept 6 - 8, 1986 Zak goes to Military School in VA

Saturday, September 6, 1986 ZACK LEFT FOR SCHOOL IN VIRGINIA

 

At last we got sunshine. It was great. After a while this morning the sun got through the fog and those old decayed clouds. I hope it will last a long long while. Esther down to Milan and Betty’s for supper. Boiled dinner. Also she and Phyllis went over to Denmark. Carmen came here for supper. Betty was coming by went up to Charlene’s instead. Carmen was pleased to be here. Well this morning Zack and Walt left for Zack’s new school military in Virginia. He is pleased, but I hate it. Will miss him more than words can say. He and Walt went by Presidential Airlines. They was entertained royally by Ed Johnson in Washington. Zack enjoyed all that. Walt hated to leave him. Zack was home sick too.

 





 

 

Sunday, September 7, 1986

 

Well it finally cleared off. We got ready and went to camp for a gathering. It was Esther’s treat. She had a nice feed of sloppy Joe’s, hot dogs, German chocolate cake and Angel cake delight. Milan, Betty, Joy, Kathy, Jay, Debbie and Jessica, Danica, Carlton, Phyllis, Nona and Kathy. Betty, Eddie, Kim, Carmen, Billie, me, Cassie, Tara, Trinna, Dorothea and Fern. It was nice. Bill didn’t go. David called this morning.

 

 

 

Monday, September 8, 1986 New Horse

 

A nice day. Well I did a wash. Esther packing and getting ready to go. Went around saying goodbye. Susan, Monica and Chris came and said goodbye tonight. Betty got a new horse today.
