The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 8 - 11, 1986

Tuesday, July 8, 1986 ZACK TOOK FIRST DRIVERS TEST, NICE LETTER FROM KIM

Today or early this morning Zack out for drivers test. He did very well. Only one mistake. He worked for Milan today, finished their walk. I did my ironing, done up housework. Got a salad prepared for supper. Betty, Bill and I took a long ride with Betty all around, up to see the new home on the Sam Ridlon place (town manager). Mr. Tarr is having its built. Also drove over to see Barry’s new house he is building. Also drove by where Kim used to live and stopped at Carmen’s. She was over to Bridgton. Dennis still sick. David, Dorothea and Iva called this p.m. Billie picked the last strawberries today. Zack up for supper and had to go for a meeting. (Drivers Ed). Carmen didn’t work tonight. Letter from Kim, a very nice interesting one and snaps. Also one from George.

Wednesday, July 9, 1986 HAY MOWED

Billie is mowing Walt’s hay. Didn’t do much today. I picked or shelled the peas for supper. I made a Jell-O and chocolate pudding. Carmen and Dennis called. Billie got all the hay mowed and it has been a very nice drying, mostly sunny day. Great day for hay and hope it will be for a long time yet so people can get the haying done. Zack been busy all day trimming lawns. Cleaned the barn yard out, hauled the stuff down in the pasture’s. He got the conveyor up for the hay. Gone out driving tonight.

Thursday, July 10, 1986 HAY ALL IN

Today Gordon Weeks raked and baled day. They had two very good days for haying. Cool and very drying. Today the wind blowed very hard. It made it a bit hard to rake, the wind blowed it so. It was on the cool side too. I did a wash, cooked a Swiss steak for supper. Zack ate here. I made a rhubarb pie. Walt and Zack loaded the hay. Billie drove the truck. Carmen and Dennis helped some. Zack to drivers meeting tonight.

Friday, July 11, 1986 Very windy most of the day

I got the work done up, regular work, changed and made beds. I watched my TV shows. Betty called several times, she had lunch here. Billie mowed and trimmed lawns, down to the spring and checked it. He was busy all day. Bill picked some strawberries. I had a light supper. In evening Billie and I down and called on Milan and Betty. Betty C took Zack over to Harrison to Old Home Days. It was quite nice until middle of forenoon then the wind began to blow.
