The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 25 - 28, 1986

 

Monday, August 25, 1986

 

Well it has been another one of those cold cloudy windy days. Long late in PM it got sunny. I washed and a few other jobs. Then I watched soaps. Betty, Bill, Kim all went to New Hampshire for the day, shopping for Kim’s clothes. It was through the airlines she got them. Carmen came, did the cleaning up. It looks very nice when she gets done. Eddie came home or to Kim’s for a while. He isn’t going to school at MMA. His leg isn’t very good. He wants to go to University Southern Maine at Gorham.

 

 

 

Tuesday, August 26, 1986

 

A beautiful perfect day, the best one we have had for a long long long time. Billie didn’t do much today. Carmen came. She got my list. Kimmy and Eddie out checking on colleges. I did the ironing, made a beef supper. Had squash. Walt and Zack went to Rhode Island for the day to see Aunt Vi

 

 

 

Wednesday, August 27, 1986

 

When we got up this morning it was raining, cloudy but kind of muggy. It cleared in PM. I didn’t do much today. Betty took Billie to the Dr. in Portland for Billie’s eye checkup. Dr. Reid. Kim and Eddie out looking for jobs. Carmen came with the groceries. It cleared off very nice after the rain. Zack and friend up to camp to stay tonight.

 

 

 

Thursday, August 28, 1986

 

A nice day, on the coolish side. Esther came up this PM to stay for a few days. Bill down town. Billie been working around all day. Watched the TV soaps. Zack up and helped Billie.
