The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 24 - 27, 1986 Zak Accepted to Military School

 

Tuesday, June 24, 1986

 

A very nice sunny day. Betty S, Betty H and I over to Lewiston to do some shopping. I got cosmetics, some socks etc. Also did some shopping at Shop and Save in Oxford. Got a rug for the dog’s bed.

 

 

 

Wednesday, June 25, 1986 BETTY AND WALT GOT FIRST LETTER FROM KIM

 

A nice day. I done some odd and end jobs. Bill to see Dr. Winchenbach in Mercy Hospital to have his throat reamed out. Dorothea took him. Betty came up, she brought Kim’s letter. It is interesting. This is Carmen’s first night off for her five day vacation. She is pleased.

 

 

 

Thursday, June 26, 1986 LETTER TO KIM

 

A quite nice day. Some clouds. I done up regular work, watched TV shows. I got my letter off to Kim today. They picked strawberries. Carmen and Dennis came over and helped. I did a wash today.

 

 

 

Friday, June 27, 1986 Zack is excepted to the military school in Virginia

 

This has been a miserable day. Cloudy and heavy rain most of the day. I fixed more strawberries for the freezer. I vacuum the house, changed beds. I watched my TV shows. Milan called a couple times. Bill down to Betty’s and watched video shows. Carmen and Dennis called again. She done some shopping for me. Gordon Weeks called in a.m. Zack got a letter today, he is excepted at the military school in Virginia.
