The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 25 - 28, 1963



Saturday, May 25, 1963

A very nice warm day. I washed. Betty and I to the dump with rubbish. Billie mowed all the lawns. He, Betty and I cleaned the cellar. I done some trimming. Fern up for supper. In evening Julie and Bonnie here. Bill put up new clothes line out back and I hung my clothes out for the first time.



Sunday, May 26, 1963

A very nice day. We done up the work. Got the screens on, cut up the meat, cleaned up the whole house. Had our first cookout. Sally, Gordon and girls here. Kennie and Dot called in p.m.



Monday, May 27, 1963

I did a big wash. In p.m. we began to clean the barn. Clothes dried good. Betty got them in and we ironed after supper. A nice hot day.



Tuesday, May 28, 1963

Clear in a.m. Clouded some in p.m. We finished the barn today. I cooked a pie, churned. After supper Betty, Carmen and I went down to Fern’s. I shampooed my hair and took a bath. A letter from Dorothea. Betty’s snaps came back today. Fern and Lloyd to Portland today. Cleaning all DONE.
