The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 21 - 24, 1963 Route 66 Filming in Mechanic Falls



Wednesday, August 21, 1963

A very nice day. I had another one of those late washes. I did a big wash. Verna, Brud and children called. Betty ate out on the picnic table today, cooked a hot dog. In p.m. she went up to Lil’s. Billie all hepped about going way tomorrow. Betty to town in evening. We still miss Mike. A Tarry-a-while guests called here with Betty.




 
Thursday, August 22, 1963

A very nice hot day. Billie left early this morning to go to Acton Fair for three days with Lawrence Boynton. They took cattle. Billie was so pleased to go. We got our ironing done, cleaned up the downstairs.




Friday, August 23, 1963

Rained. Cooked and churned, finished cleaning up the house. Got letter from Dorothea. Betty, Carmen and I to town. Sent Betty’s film. Mailed Billie’s payments.



Saturday, August 24, 1963

Cloudy and quite cold. Well we done up our work in in p.m. we, Betty, Carmen and I went to Mechanic Falls to see Marty Milner and Glenn Corbett do a scene on their Route 66. It was very interesting and we enjoyed it very much. Blanche went with us. Fern and Lloyd called. Betty got letter from Mike. He left for Korea by boat yesterday.
