The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 2 - 5, 1963



Sunday, June 2, 1963

A BEAUTIFUL DAY. Es and the kids came. Penny, Susan, Dana and Billie. We all was glad to see them. We got the house all cleaned out to the living room. Kennie and Dot here. Es and kids came from Ohio, left Saturday, June 1 at 5 AM. Got to Brattleboro Vermont last night, over 600 miles. Got here today about 2 PM.



Monday, June 3, 1963

Another one of those very nice days. I did a big wash. Es, Fern, Lloyd, Billie and Kennie called, made some plans of what we are to do. This p.m. Betty, Penny and I to Fryeburg to Holden’s garage. Had a new tire put on. Mama, Fern, Lloyd, Susan, Dana and Billie went to Raymond. A lot of callers after supper. Bob, Kennard, Faye, Nancy, three or four other guys.



Tuesday, June 4, 1963

Another one of those nice hot day. Esther here in early a.m. to watch Carmen. Betty and I took Carmen over to Blanche’s for the evening. Out to supper tonight. Down to Lobsterland. It was Lloyd’s treat. Fern, Lloyd, Bill, Esther, Penny and myself. A delicious meal.



Wednesday, June 5, 1963

Hot Hot Hot. Hot and we love it. We do need a little rain. Gardens is all up. Ironed, washed. Esther up, took the kids over to the mountain for a ride. In p.m. Betty took kids for a swim over to North Bridgton. Betty got a bathing suit. Es here in p.m. Betty down to see Dr. Richards. He said to her to write to Sen. Smith. In evening Es up and Kennie and Dot. Hope Betty gets good results from her letter.
