The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 27 - 30, 1963



Thursday, June 27, 1963

HOT HOT 99 – 101. Another nice hot day. Been busy all day. Cleaned up the chambers. Betty, Susan and Carmen over to North Bridgton swimming all p.m. Billie worked at the McDonald’s farm on the Ridge haying for Lawrence. Showers in PM. We sure need rain. Betty got another letter from her Mike. Now that is something.



Friday, June 28, 1963

Not quite as hot today. A little cloudy. I was busy all day. Betty to town to get the car. She went swimming over to North Bridgton. Done up my housework. Lawrence and crew began work over to Les Thomas’s farm this morning. To town after supper. ANOTHER LETTER FROM MIKE.



Saturday, June 29, 1963

Cloudy. Not so hot. BETTY AND MIKE HAPPY DAY. She talked with him by phone. That was when all was ironed out. What a relief. Norma Gay came this morning. Carmen’s beautiful photos came today.




Sunday, June 30, 1963 100°

Hot Hot Hot. Betty is a very happy girl at last. He is going to get his transfer, going at once he told Betty. We had a steak cookout.
