The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 22 - 26, 1963





Saturday, June 22, 1963

Cold, cloudy and windy. We killed rest of the roosters. Nancy Andrews called to see Susan.

Sunday, June 23, 1963

A nice day, not too cold, but dry to sunny. Good day for haying. Billie helped Lawrence. Kennie, Dot here, Aunt Ava called. Milan and a friend called. Fern and Lloyd called. Bill down to Lloyd’s to watch ballgame in p.m. Susan wore a new dress. She looked nice in it, very pretty. Nancy Andrews and Susan rode bikes.



Monday, June 24, 1963 TALKED WITH DOROTHEA

90° temperature. Dorothea called tonight. A hot day. I did a big wash. Betty isn’t or hasn’t been well today. Billie mowed all the hay today. We had Italian sandwiches for supper. Kids and I called at Ferns after supper. Mowed hay. Bill fixed driveway for Betty’s house lot.



Tuesday, June 25, 1963 HAY ALL IN

Another Hot Day 90- 100. I have been busy all day long. It has been so hot. Betty, Susan to town. Betty got her papers off for that transfer. Betty feels better today. Billie and crew got the hay all in. Kid’s swimming and called at Barbara’s. Kids ironed after supper.



Wednesday, June 26, 1963

Another hot  90-100. Betty and Susan to town. Betty had to get Mr. Lackee’s affidavit and get it off. Nancy Andrews came down in p.m. Blanche here, she cut and shampooed Mama’s hair. I churned, cleaned up part of the housework. Billie mowed hay. Betty got 2 letters from Mike.
