The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 17 - 20, 1963



Friday, May 17, 1963

A very nice hot day. We picked some greens. Betty, Carmen and I left about 11:30 to go to Gorham. We went to Buxton and got strawberry plants. Betty and I to town shopping.



Saturday, May 18, 1963

Rain Rain all day. It rained hard all day. I washed, cooked, cleaned up all the house. In evening Betty and I to the movies. She and Bonnie up to Percy’s. Fern up for supper and evening. Billie up to Chet’s fencing. Bill harrowed.



Sunday, May 19, 1963 Mowed Lawns

A beautiful day. I cleaned the back porch. Billie up to Chet’s. Bill set out strawberry plants and set out his tomato plants. They got bushes out of the raspberry bed, cleaned out. Betty helped all day to do the housework. Kennie and Dot called Fern and Lloyd, Alice and Lawrence Boynton called. Alice came to see Carmen. Arts family called. Bill and Betty mowed lawns for first time.



Monday, May 20, 1963

Cloudy today. I washed. In p.m. Betty, Carmen and I went to Norway. Betty got a few things for Carmen. I bought me a new dress. I sent letter to Jeff, Susan and Esther. We had a heavy shower with a lot of heavy winds about suppertime. I ironed tonight. Kennard and Delores called. Lawrence brought the bull up tonight.
