The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 1 - 4, 1963

Monday, July 1, 1963

90 to 100°. Another one of those awful hot days. I washed to big washings.  Billie still working at Lawrence’s haying. Kids over to Long Lake today. Betty took Susan to see Dr. Richards. Betty felt a lot better.

Tuesday, July 2, 1963

So hot all day. I ironed, cooked. Betty and kids downtown, over to lake all day. Took Carmen and back downtown in evening, Betty and Norma. Had a high wind in evening. Awful hot.

Wednesday, July 3, 1963

Not so hot today. Betty got a letter from Mike. Today Betty, Norma, Susan, Carmen and I went for a ride to see a old vacated house. Bill and I went out for a ride. Bob and Blanche called. Kids home all evening. Expected word from Mike any day now in regards to his transfer. Mike’s Father’s Day gift came.

Thursday, July 4, 1963

Didn’t get up very early, worked all day. Joy, Blanche and children called. Churned. Kids helped to do the work. Betty and Norma climbed Bear Mountain with Randy. Aunt Ava and Ethel Lovejoy called. Bill down to Fern and Lloyd’s and watched ballgame. Kids downtown tonight. Baby Carmen good all day.
