The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 21 - 24, 1963



Tuesday, May 21, 1963

A beautiful day. In a.m. Blanche and Lori called. Lori stayed here while Blanche went to doctors. Fern, Lloyd and Cindy called. I cleaned both stoves and the refrigerator. Betty and Carmen for a ride with Blanche tonight. She sent a telegram to Mike to phone her tonight.



Wednesday, May 22, 1963

Kind of cloudy most of the day. Blanche and I to Norway to see Dot. She was out. Dot operated on  today for cancer in each breast. Came home, cleaned some cupboards. Betty not feeling too good during middle of the day. Better at night. Hilda and Aunt Ava called. Betty cleaned the draws and a cupboard. She helped with the work.



Thursday, May 23, 1963

COLD all day. A very nice day. MIKE CALLED. Poor homesick Mike called tonight. He had just got back from the field maneuvers.



Friday, May 24, 1963

A heavy frost this morning. It became warmer today. I finished the kitchen today. I’m so tired. Nice and sunny. Dot came home today from the hospital.
