The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 18 - 21, 1963

Tuesday, June 18, 1963

I cleaned up the downstairs. Went to Naples to get Mr. Martin’s affidavit for Mike’s transfer. Will be so glad when we get everything together. Also called on Mr. Lackee.

The blow came tonight. Mike is in serious trouble and everything is over. I am sick through and through over it. It’s too bad. The outcome don’t look one least bit bright. Why did he do wrong? I pray everything will come out but not any hopes now for anything. Poor Carmen. Dawn here today.

Thursday, June 20, 1963

Cloudy. Heavy clouds in evening. Hope we get some rain. Today we got the chambers all done. Trimmed grass. Betty made a tuna fish casserole. We had strawberries and cream for supper. Fern here for supper. Susan up to Blanche’s today. She is making her a dress. She stayed up there for supper. Came home, she and Betty down to Barbara’s. About sick over Mike. I pray it isn’t too bad and they will be happy all together some day.

A little pressure lifted tonight. Today Betty, Blanche, Susan, Carmen and I went to Norway, Daniel’s photography studio. Blanche had Carmen’s picture taken. We had a cold picnic lunch along the side of the lake Penneeseewassee. Betty got a call from her husband this p.m. She went to see Richards. He is the best friend Betty ever had. He does so much for her and what he thinks is best. He is bound to get Mike’s transfer for him. I am still praying all comes out okay. This family needs to be together.
