The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 17 - 20, 1963



Wednesday, July 17, 1963

Hot, a nice day. Betty and I to town. Sent Mike’s money to come home with  for 31 day leave. Also did a little shopping. In p.m. kids went swimming. After supper I wrote to Dorothea. Girls went to band concert.



Thursday, July 18, 1963 Mike Leaves Fort Lewis

Very hot. Today we had done everything getting ready for Mike. Yes we are already tonight after cleaning up and down, over and around. Cooked, picked peas, raspberries. Blanche here. Betty cleaned the car and the bird. Holly and Steve Jr here. Susan put my hair up. Tax bill came today.



Friday, July 19, 1963 New Refrigerator

No Mike came today. Mike got delayed at Fort Lewis and didn’t leave. He called Betty. He won’t leave till Monday. We are still hoping and praying he gets his transfer. We didn’t do much, just waited for two rings all day. We got the one about 8:30 PM. Milan called Norma last night. I picked half bushel peas and string beans and some raspberries. Blanche and Bob called in evening. Billie bought me a new refrigerator. Hot point, very pretty, I like it.



Saturday, July 20, 1963 2 Qts.

Eclipse today at 5:42 PM. Evelyn Ridlon called was some strawberries this morning. Picked raspberries. Picked some string beans for Kennard. Bill and Billie put the refrigerators in and leveled them up. Bill down to Ferns for ballgame. Kids and Blanche down to George and Thena’s swimming. All watched the eclipse.
