The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 13 - 16, 1963

Saturday, July 13, 1963

Hot. No letter for Betty today. What has happened. We don’t know what to do, think or say now. I’m really worried of what the outcome will be. I do so hope nothing will happen. I hope he gets his transfer. Susan got up and went fishing with Bob. She was up at 4:30 AM. Had a good time, got a good catch.

Sunday, July 14, 1963

Cloudy. We had some showers. Bill, Billie and I picked peas. Billie down to Fern and Lloyd’s. Fern, Lloyd, Bob, Blanche, Kennie and Dot.

Monday, July 15, 1963 MIKE CALLED

No transfer. But he has got to go to Korea. He has a 31 day leave. Betty wasn’t here when he called. I had to talk. Betty is wilder than a hawk about his coming. We are so glad glad glad. He will see his daughter for the first time. Betty, Carmen and kids up to Auburn. Bull went today. Rained in a.m. Mama over to Aunt Ava’s for her 83rd birthday. We called at Whitney’s and saw Christopher. Tie up white washed.

Tuesday, July 16, 1963

Betty and I with Carmen and Lassie went down through the woods to Fern and Lloyd’s for a special reason. Betty and I did a big wash. Also Betty worked hard all day and until into the evening. I was worried she got so tired. She is so pleased about Mike coming she could lift this house and put it back. We all are so glad. But when he comes next year we will have a grand time. Susan didn’t feel good today.
