The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 10 - 13, 1963

Monday, June 10, 1963 Call from DOROTHEA

A beautiful day. I washed, clothes dried good. Betty had car, took Carmen to doctors. Said it was a little cold she had, teeth bothering her some. Betty got her official letter today. They are still at work on Mike’s transfer. Fern, Esther, Penny and Billie up about suppertime. After we got dishes washed we all enjoy Betty’s snaps she showed us. It was so good talking with Dorothea tonight.

Tuesday, June 11, 1963 To Portland

Kind of cloudy. Blanche, Esther, Susan, Dana, Billie and I to Portland so Susan, Dana and Billie could see the Atlantic Ocean. We went down to Eastern Promenade then over through South Portland at Cape Elizabeth and to Two Lights. We saw the rugged coastline, the big fort, and monuments. A day of sites worth seeing. Penny stayed up here with Betty. Betty, Susan and Dana down to Barb’s in evening.

Wednesday, June 12, 1963

Cloudy dreary day. I made a pudding. Esther, Fern and all the children here for supper. We had fried chicken, it was so good.

Thursday, June 13, 1963

Cleared off nice all day, not too hot. Didn’t do very much today. Blanche called in a.m. Betty and I down to Dawn’s. Esther came and got the kids. Betty and I down to Dawn’s to get an affidavit for Mike’s transfer. We get some plants. Esther, Fern and kids here after supper to bid goodbye. Betty got her affidavit from Rev. Martin.
