The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 21 - 24, 1963 Mike Came

Sunday, July 21, 1963

Cloudy, not much sun. East wind all day. In p.m. we had showers. Betty and I washed a big wash. Bill down to Ferns to watch ballgame. Billie, Norma and I picked string beans. Kennard called. Fern and Lloyd up in evening.

Monday, July 22, 1963

Again we are excited, preparing for Mike’s arrival. We ironed, cleaned up the house, cooked, churned. We sure have been busy all day. After supper Billie picked string beans. Bill picked raspberries. I took a bath. Betty and I had our hair put up, mine looked nice. Norma did it. Susan done Betty’s. 12:50 PM no call from Mike.

Thursday, July 23, 1963 MIKE CAME

Well this day started in same as any other. Betty down at the dumps because Mike didn’t come last night nor she didn’t hear from him until about 4 PM. He called from Auburn. He got a ride right from Boston. Betty, Carmen and I got there in less than one hour. A happy and very emotional reunion. Mike met his child for first time. Betty had a happy day after all. Bill to work early.

Wednesday, July 24, 1963

Hot Hot Hot. At last Betty and Carmen have Mike at home. They are happy family. How glad we will be when his Army career is over. They took Carmen and went down town. Came home, when swimming. Kids and I picked beans and peas. Mama and I worked on them. Had a nice chicken supper. Kids all to band concert. So glad Mike is home.
