The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 5 - 8, 1962



Wednesday, September 5, 1962 FILMS gone

Foggy and cloudy. First day of school. Two years since I sent one into school. Sent films in today. Billie to the dentist. I made a squash pie, tarts, and chiffon cake. Linda Berry and sisters called in evening. Betty and I looked over my clippings.



Thursday, September 6, 1962

Cleared off nice today, except real cold. I done up regular work. Cleaned up all the downstairs. Looked over rest of my clippings. My vacuum cleaner bags came today. Betty down and done the hens at Lloyd’s. Real cold today, frost expected tonight. Billie, Betty, Mama and I to Sweden looking for pullets. Betty got letter from Mike. She is happy all the time. Billie got through work at 330.



Friday, September 7, 1962

A beautiful day. I did a wash for Fern. Dolores called in a.m. Betty got ready to go to Portland with Linda. She came about noon. They went over to Harrison and came back and got ready to go to Portland. Got home about 930. Betty bought her a very pretty maternity dress. We are looking for a letter from Dorothea any day now.



Saturday, September 8, 1962 CALF BORN

A very nice day. I cooked in early a.m. In PM Bill, Billie, Betty and me loaded the trash and hauled it to the dump. Bill and I called at Gordon’s. Dolores here in p.m. Billie to town in evening. Bill down to Jean’s. About 6 PM cow went down to the other end of the pasture. So Billie got her back and into the other pasture. At about 930 or 10 PM she had a black bull calf. We done Ferns ironing. Lil Edson is very sick with a strep sore throat.
