The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 15 - 18, 1962



Thursday, November 15, 1962

Mostly cloudy all day. Very cold and windy. I cleaned up the house, cooked, jumped and leaped. We are having company for supper. Dick and Helen Fleck. Betty not feeling very well, stayed in bed all day. Dr. Greenleaf died.



Friday, November 16, 1962

A fair and nice day. I done up the work. I cleaned up the house. Wrote out Thanksgiving menu. Tonight we went to town.



Saturday, November 17, 1962

Fair today. Sunny all day, on the cool side. Betty, Blanche and I writing in PM. Betty out again in evening. Fern came up in evening till Lloyd came. Billie to bed early and slept all through the night. Aunt Ava called in p.m.



Sunday, November 18, 1962

The cloudy day. Didn’t get up till late. Done up the work. Cooked a bit, tarts and mince pie. Bill worked on the septic tank. Betty out all p.m. driving and down to Kay’s for supper. Kennie, Dot called, Bob and Blanche. Art called. I’m going to sell him eggs. Bill called at Gordon and Sally’s. Wrote letters. Bill and Kennie worked on the toilet seat. What a mess.
