The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 11 - 14, 1962

Sunday, November 11, 1962

Cloudy dreary day. I hate them. Didn’t do anything. Things are so ugly most of the time. Kennie, Dot called also Aunt Ava. Bob and Blanche called and got Billie and I. We went out to supper with them at Barjo’s at Norway for their wedding anniversary. Betty out practicing driving tonight. She didn’t get ahead at all on her parking.

Monday, November 12, 1962

A beautiful, westerly winds, drying day. I washed, clothes dried very good. Bill didn’t have to work in observation of Armistice Day. He hunted. Betty and I up to Blanche’s. I called at Dolores’s. Fern and Lloyd called also Blanche. Betty made out her order to Sears for Christmas.

Tuesday, November 13, 1962

A rainy day and cloudy. Cold. I ironed, cooked. Busy all day. I churned. I am so slow. Betty sat and figured all day on bills, Christmas order etc. I called at Aunt Ava’s in evening. Betty out trying to learn to park so she can get her license.

Wednesday, November 14, 1962

Cloudy, a little fun. Cold and cloudy all day. I made some jelly. Bob and Blanche over here. Bobby got a deer, buck. I churned. Betty and I called on Minnie late p.m. Fern and Lloyd came up. Betty, Mama and I went down to the cemetery to see the new stone. It is very pretty. Betty and I called at Ferns in evening. Betty on the uneasy side. Billie to work at 5 AM, a rush order.
