The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 20 - 23, 1962



Thursday, September 20, 1962

A nice day, on the cool side. I cleaned up my downstairs. Swept, dusted, wiped up the floors. I made a pie. Blanche called. Betty walked over to Blanche’s and she fixed her skirt. Bill and I called at Jeans and Gordon and Sally’s. Betty picked all of the pretty flowers tonight. MIKE 19 today.



Friday, September 21, 1962 FROST

A heavy frost last night. All white this morning. First frost last night. On the cold side today. Today I washed. Dry mopped all of the house. Churned a pound and a half of butter. First churning today. Betty made cookies. Fern and Lloyd got us some groceries. It is quite cold today, some wind.



Saturday, September 22, 1962 First Pullet Egg

Cold. On the cold side after a very heavy frost last night. I cooked baked beans etc. In PM I went to Sylvia Andrews birthday party with Amy and Pat. In late p.m. Fern came up for supper and evening. We got our first pullet egg today. Bill worked on ditch and porch. Bill began his vacation.



Sunday, September 23, 1962

Warmer today. Didn’t get up till late. Done up the work, got supper to going, made a squash pie in a.m. Also I ironed. Bob, Blanche, Art Ward and Stan Whitney called. Billie and Art hauled their sawdust for winter bedding. Bill worked on porch.
